Chiropractic Charlotte NC Gonstead Chiropractic Care

We Are A Gonstead Chiropractic Office in Charlotte NC

We practice Gonstead chiropractic therapy in Charlotte NC for back pain relief. This means the fundamentals of our approach with every patient follows Gonstead protocol:

  1. Visualization: A careful examination of a patients posture in different positions and while walking. and visual inspection of the skin and surrounding areas of the spine for spasm and/or swelling.
  2. Instrumentation: Utilizing a device called a Nervoscope, heat distribution along either side of the spine is compared at each level. Why? Inflammation produces increased heat and a disc with abnormal pressure will become inflamed. A Nervoscope can pinpoint the exact disc involved. This is completely painless for the patient. It feels like two fingers following the path of the spine.
  3. Static Palpation: Performed while the patient is stationary. The spine is palpated for tenderness and swelling.
  4. Motion Palpation: Performed while the patient is moved in different directions while an individual vertebra is assessed for normal range of motion.
  5. Digital X-rays: Taken to get a full picture of the patient’s spine and to correlate with the other exam findings. This will gain a detailed understanding of what’s going on with the patient and how to correct it.

By analyzing and measuring the entire spinal structure, problem areas can be identified and the degree of misalignment measured. Here in Charlotte NC, our Gonstead chiropractic therapy for back pain relief follows the same principles and is backed by years of experience.

What is Gonstead?

The spine (and other joints) are assessed biomechanically through well understood and accepted scientific principles. After an assessment the adjustment is performed according to these same principles.

Gonstead Background

Dr. Clarence Gonstead, DC was the originator of what is now known as Gonstead Technique. Utilizing his background in engineering, he developed a unique understanding and approach to addressing the spine and related health problems.

Upon graduation from Palmer College, Dr. Gonstead opened his practice in an old bank building in downtown Mt Horeb, Wisconsin. His advanced understanding of the nervous system lead to outstanding results for his patients, so much so that he moved his practice to a much larger facility. He eventually built a 29,000 sq/ft clinic in Mt Horeb. People were traveling from not only all over the state, but also all over the country and beyond to seek Dr. Gonstead’s help. He eventually had to build a hotel to accommodate out of town patients as well as a private airplane strip.

Dr. Gonstead was working 6 and 1/2 days a week, often until 2-3 am to keep up with the demand. He started teaching what he knew to fellow chiropractors. By this time chiropractors from around the world were clamoring to learn what he was doing. He was an amazing doctor.

How Is Gonstead Different?

The main difference is the level of thoroughness and precision in the application of a chiropractic adjustment. Dr. Gonstead recognized the need for precision in not only locating the causative vertebra(e) but also equal precision in correcting this vertebra(e) back into a normal, healthy alignment.

Up to this point in time, many chiropractors were often just going to painful and swollen areas of the spine that they found through palpitation. Then they would push on those areas. Dr. Gonstead devised a far more complex system to find where and how to adjust the spine.

After Dr. Gonstead’s death in 1978 the popularity of his work began to diminish. The method was difficult and time consuming to learn, students had to travel to Mt. Horeb, WI to access his teachings. Therefore, fewer chiropractors practiced his proven technique. Now, over 40 years after his passing, it’s estimated only about 1% of all chiropractors practice Gonstead as it was taught and meant to be utilized.
